The Big City

Channelside

So much for the rain. The forecast was for rain all day today, but in typical Florida fashion, not a drop was to be found. The weather was perfect, so we headed over to downtown Tampa for the Florida Aquarium at Channelside. Being that it was Sunday, and also the fact that the cruise ship "Miracle" was docked at the Port of Tampa, it was very crowded. Since we were already there, we decided to check out the aquarium anyhow.

After an hour or so looking around the aquarium, we headed over to Channelside to grab some dinner at Stumps Supper Club. The food was outstanding, for the menu consisted of mostly southern style dishes, and not a scrap was left on anyones plate. After dinner, we drove up to Ybor City and down 7th Avenue to look around at the shops, restaurants, clubs, and the cigar companies that made Tampa famous. Ybor City is very reminiscent of the French Quarters and Bourbon Street in New Orleans, with its brick paved streets and architecture.

Our next stop took us to the University of Tampa, where we took a walk down to the Hillsborough River at Plant Park. After walking around to view the sweeping skyline of downtown Tampa, we headed back west, and made our last stop of the evening at Lake Tarpon to catch the sunset over the lake. While we were there, we came across a Florida alligator, as he was just floating along the top of the waters, soaking up the remaining rays of sunshine. It was another beautiful sunset over the lake, and was a fitting end to a very enjoyable weekend.

Tour Around The Bay

Big Cat Rescue

The plan for today was to start over in Tampa, and take a tour through the Big Cat Rescue, and finish the day with a sunset on the beach. So we packed up our gear and headed out to see some of the big cats, including, Lions, Tigers, Panthers, Cougars, Lynxes, Bobcats, Ocelots and many others. Big Cat Rescue is an unique place, where all the cats on the property are rescued, abandoned, injured or tortured animals. It was a great experience to learn more about these big cats, and how they are caring for and educating the public about these beautiful animals.

After lunch, we headed down to St. Petersburg to The Pier, to feed the Pelicans at The Bait Store. What a treat to get so close to the clever birds, even though on land they walk so awkward, but are one of the most graceful birds over the water. We took a stroll through The Pier for some shopping, then headed down to the best beach in the Tampa Bay area, Fort De Soto. We walked the beach and did a little shelling, and took a stroll out into the water to cool off. The sunset was again beautiful as it sank slowly into the Gulf of Mexico, and made for another perfect ending to another great day.

Fun In The Gardens

Roller Coaster

For the past couple of days, our relatives from the "Great White North" has been visiting with us, so we decided to show them around Tampa Bay since it was their first time ever to Florida. It is great to see them, for we haven't seen them since we left last year, so we decided to show them some of our favorite spots around the bay. After doing the typical "walk on Clearwater Beach", we made our way out to one of our favorite places, Busch Gardens of Tampa.

It was an overcast day, but still warm, which was perfect for not only photographing the animals, but for us too, since we didn't have to be out in the hot Florida sun all day. We took them all around the park, and had a blast. For lunch, we even made a few friends, as we hand fed the Egrets, Ibis' and the occasional pesky Sea Gull some chicken. Only problem is we wore them out from all the excitement, but we still have plenty of more places to go yet.

Curious Critter

Squirrel

While I was taking architectural photographs in downtown Clearwater, I was being stalked by a curious little squirrel. This little fella was following me all over, watching me with great curiosity, almost as if he was trying to figure out what in the world I was doing.

He was climbing up into the trees and looking down, and every time I would move, he would move into a better position to continue watching. Funny, even in the middle of a busy town like Clearwater, Florida, if one just takes a moment to look around, you'd be amazed what one can see.

Springtime

Osprey

Winter is over. We had about a month or so of temperatures in the high 60's during the day, and 50's at night, and we even saw temperatures sink to the upper 30's a couple of times, but now, upper 70's to low 80's are upon us. Flowers are blooming, butterflies are fluttering, leaves are opening and the birds are pairing up to raise their young.

We set out this morning to go exploring, and this time, we had no agenda whatsoever. So we thought we would head to upper Pinellas County to the Brooker Creek Wildlife Preserve, which we can see from the back of our home. We went to the education center, and roamed around the preserve to learn more about what western Florida looked like before it was developed, and saw numerous Song Birds, Hawks, Vultures, Herons, and even a Pilated Woodpecker.

As we left, we drove by numerous farms and horse ranches, so we decided to stop at one to take a look around, and found one that had a sign announcing a baby girl. We were met by the owners, who were happy to show us around, and they had numerous draft horses, and out in the field, they had a cute four-week old filly named Aurora. It was amazing to see such a small, cute and curious creature, and we had a great time petting her and her mother, both of whom seemed very happy together. We also got to play with several Jack Russell Terriers, playing catch and retrieve with a large purple rubber ball.

After talking awhile to the owner, we said goodbye and headed north to New Port Richey to look around, since we have never been there. Not much going on but the traffic, so we headed back down the coast to Tarpon Springs, then making our way to one of our favorite places, Honeymoon Island. When we got there we thought about going to the beach, but after I thought about it for a second, I said we should go on the trails to see what wildlife we can find.

Since spring is upon us, the animals are getting very active, and can be seen almost everywhere. As we walked down the 8-mile trail, we saw all kinds of woodland birds, an Armadillo, Snakes, and three of the most unbelievable sights. First, the Ospreys are everywhere. Huge nests are being built, and they are paired up all over. They are one of our favorite birds, for they are simply stunning to see in the wild. As we watched them, we then came upon our second surprise, a pair of Great Horned Owls. The female was in her nest, sitting on some eggs, and every once in a while just peeking her head over the rim of the nest to see where the male was, which was sitting high up in a White Pine tree, and they would hoot back and forth to each other. Simply amazing, and they were extremely difficult to spot since they blend in so well with their environment.

As we came close to the furthest point of the trail, the best surprise was waiting. Around the bend, there he sat, an American Bald Eagle. So majestic, powerful and dominating looking. He sat high in the tree tops, and looked around his territory. The Ospreys however didn't like his presence, and after a while several males bonded together and dove at him to scare him off. After several attempts, the Eagle decided it was time to go, and flew off into the sunset. Words can't describe observing what we saw, only that it was a fitting end to a perfect spring day.

Snow Belt

Blizzard

Watching the weather over the weekend and seeing the blizzard and snow storms up the eastern seaboard brought back memories of similar winter storms back home in Cleveland when we lived there, and it seemed a year ago was the worst since I can remember (well, it was, since it was a record snowfall). And since we lived in the Secondary Snow Belt and got pounded from Lake Effect Snow from Lake Erie, we always had plenty to shovel.

It just wouldn't snow just a little bit, but we would get feet at a time, and the week before Christmas we got over three feet of it. I'll never forget sitting there looking out the front window and it just kept coming and coming and coming...

So do I miss it? Not even close, for the weekend here will be in the high 70's to low 80's and the only snow we'll see is in the ice box.

Pop Junk

Pop Junk

It was a lousy day today with on and off rain showers, and an approaching cold front coming into the bay area. But that didn't stop me from from trying something I've been wanting to do for quite sometime. So I hurried down to the garage and gathered up some junk to photograph.

My goal was simple and my objective was clear: using my 60mm macro lens with an EF25 extension tube, and the only aperture to be used was 2.8, I wanted to photograph junk and turn it something artistic. So after a few hours out in the lanai photographing, I went to work in Photoshop to turn junk into "Pop Junk", and the results was better then I expected. Made a rainy day into a very productive one to say the least.

I On Tampa Bay

Tampa

Recently, I was interviewed by the local "iNetwork" Television Network affiliate here in Tampa, WXPX-66, for a show titled "i on Tampa Bay". I was contacted by the Production Coordinator from the network, for they came across my blog, and was interested in doing a segment on myself, and telling my story of someone who grew up and lived in the Midwest, and moved to the Tampa Bay area, and how I have adjusted to the move. But more importantly, they were really impressed by the photographs I have shot in the short time I have been in Tampa as we travel around and show the photographs and the stories that accompany them.

The interview was interesting, and my segment will be a full thirty minute piece on my story, on what led to my decision to move to Tampa, as well as learning more about the wildlife that is found in the area. Also how I have become involved in the community by telling my story through the lens of a camera, and capturing the abundant beauty of this area. My segment will be going next into post-production, and should be airing in the next six to eight weeks. I will update the blog when my segment is to air. Stay tuned...

Downpour

Downpour

Today was the fourth-wettest day in Tampa history. Bands of rain went through many parts of the Tampa Bay area, with some areas getting as much as 4 inches of rain per hour and winds gusting up to 40 mph in some storms.

There has been heavy flooding since early Friday morning, resulting in some cars being stuck on roads, major traffic tieups, accidents, and roof collapses. There were also been reports of hail. Someone breakout the kayaks.
